what we do

At Costa Humboldt, we design and implement programs, research, and technological solutions that breathe new life into coastal and marine ecosystems. Our work isn’t just about protecting nature—it’s about nurturing the delicate relationship between communities and the ocean that sustains them.

With science-backed models that deliver real results, we work hand-in-hand with coastal communities, providing technical guidance, training, and support. We harness the power of data science and advocate for public policies that improve both ecosystem health and the livelihoods of fishing families who depend on these waters.

We’ve learned that lasting coastal conservation doesn’t happen in isolation. It requires bringing together diverse voices, knowledge systems, and expertise. That’s why we weave together scientific insights with community wisdom, connecting public and private efforts across borders to build more resilient and vibrant marine ecosystems.

HOW WE WORK

Our approach always begins with listening. We collaborate closely with communities, local organizations, and key stakeholders to develop solutions that respect the unique character and needs of each coastal territory. We believe that the most effective conservation happens when people feel ownership over the process.

Knowledge isn’t meant to be locked away in research papers or technical reports. We’re committed to sharing what we learn through technology transfer and hands-on training programs. Our goal is for communities to transform from passive beneficiaries into active leaders of positive change in their marine environments.

OUR VISION FOR CHANGE

Local Community Training and Building Capacity:

We envision coastal communities confidently managing their resources using a powerful blend of scientific information and traditional knowledge, with strategies tailored to their specific needs and aspirations.

Thriving Ecosystems:

We work toward marine ecosystems that are protected and restored, continuing to provide the essential ecosystem services that both people and nature depend on for generations to come.

Climate Resilience and Social Prosperity:

By bringing together ecological understanding with social issues, we help communities and ecosystems adapt to climate impacts, reducing vulnerability and building stronger response capabilities when facing environmental challenges. Through this integrated approach, we’re creating a future where healthy oceans and thriving coastal communities support each other in a sustainable balance.

Our work focuses on diverse marine coastal ecosystems throughout Chile and Latin America, including:

estuaries, coastal wetlands, fjords, channels, islands, open ocean waters and reef systems.
