Solutions to mitigate climate change_

The fight against climate change requires urgent and comprehensive action. To limit global warming to 1.5°C, as recommended by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), it is crucial to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. At the same time, we face a crisis in natural spaces, with biodiversity and ecosystems under constant threat. Addressing these interconnected challenges demands solutions that are both innovative and inclusive.

At Costa Humboldt, we are committed to restoring key coastal ecosystems that have been degraded over time. Our goal is to directly restore at least 500 hectares of these vital habitats by 2030, using diverse methodologies tailored to the unique needs of each ecosystem. These efforts not only aim to heal the environment but also to strengthen the communities that depend on it.

We believe in empowering local communities through technology transfer, training, and ongoing monitoring. By supporting sustainable and productive initiatives, we help foster economic diversification while ensuring that restoration efforts align with the cultural practices and economic realities of each territory.

One of our most impactful initiatives is the development of regenerative brown seaweed aquaculture in collaboration with local communities. This approach not only promotes ecological restoration but also creates sustainable economic opportunities, demonstrating how conservation and development can go hand in hand.

Nature-Based Coastal Solutions: A Holistic Approach_

Marine and coastal ecosystems are essential to life on Earth. They support rich biodiversity, sustain local economies, and serve as natural barriers against climate change. However, these ecosystems are increasingly threatened by human activities and the impacts of global warming. Our approach combines scientific research, community engagement, and sustainable management to develop impactful and lasting solutions.

KEY ACTIONS

Coastal assessment:

We collect and analyze data on biodiversity, oceanography, fisheries, and human impacts to gain a comprehensive understanding of coastal ecosystem health and resilience.

Management plans:

We co-create strategies to protect and sustainably manage species critical to biodiversity and local economies, integrating scientific insights with traditional knowledge and community practices.

Marine biodiversity portfolio:

With over 4 million biodiversity records, we have created an open access database to advances scientific knowledge, supports conservation efforts, and serves as an educational tool to inspire ocean stewardship.

Catalyst species studies:

We conduct applied research on coastal species and ecosystem biodiversity, mapping their distribution and habitats, and developing targeted protection strategies that reflect their ecological, cultural, and economic significance.

Coastal Spatial Planning: A Sustainable and Inclusive Approach_

To optimize the diverse uses of the coastal areas, we focus on contributing to harmonizing and regulating activities to ensure the sustainability of coastal areas’ natural and cultural heritage. Our approach is rooted in participation, fostering the co-design of solutions and spatial planning that balance human development and the conservation of coastal ecosystems.

Recognizing the coastal areas as a dynamic and multifunctional space where economic, social, and environmental interests intersect, our efforts aim to strengthen the implementation of public coastal planning policies. We promote integrated management to effectively address current and future challenges.

LINES OF ACTION

Technical and scientific support:

We provide advanced recommendations to local authorities and communities to implement public coastal planning policies. This includes generating scientific data, conducting technical analyses, and developing management proposals to enable informed, evidence-based decision-making.

Promoting harmonious coastal use:

We design and share management strategies that integrate human needs with ecosystem conservation. By addressing potential conflicts between activities such as fishing, tourism, aquaculture, and conservation, we aim to ensure long-term sustainability and equitable use of coastal resources.

Conservation as a core principle:

All our initiatives prioritize the protection and restoration of coastal ecosystems. These ecosystems are vital as natural barriers against climate change, reservoirs of biodiversity, and sources of livelihoods for local communities.

Participatory approach and co-design of solutions:

We collaborate closely with communities, local organizations, and key stakeholders to develop solutions tailored to local contexts. This participatory approach ensures that strategies are inclusive, culturally relevant, and sustainable over time.
