02 / Community-based conservation approaches

Local and traditional conservation approaches_

We integrate scientific knowledge, advanced technology, and traditional local knowledge to promote a participatory approach to managing marine and coastal resources. We recognize the power of communities as key agents of local transformation is one of the most direct paths to achieving effective conservation.

We design participatory management plans for marine spaces that combine scientific and traditional knowledge; we implement measures aimed at the recovery of local fisheries through relevant and precautionary management actions; promote the development of multicultural transfer programs; we foster special interest tourism led by local communities; and implement regenerative aquaculture initiatives.

Our territorial approach respects the unique characteristics of each community, recognizing their leading role in the sustainable management of their natural resources and strengthening socio-ecological resilience in the face of current environmental challenges.

Each action implemented has a territorial approach that respects local socio-ecological specificities, ensuring that local voices are central to decision-making. This integrated model not only seeks to conserve marine biodiversity but also strengthens community resilience in the face of current environmental challenges, creating a balance where ecosystem protection and human well-being advance in harmony.

Coastal Fund_

In coastal communities, the sea is a source of livelihood, identity, and culture. However, these communities face growing challenges from ecosystem pressures and climate change.

To address this, we established the Coastal Fund to support local communities by financing and expanding projects that promote biodiversity conservation, cultural preservation, education, and sustainable economic development.

This fund provides indigenous peoples, fishers, and local communities with financial resources and technical assistance to enhance well-being, protect marine ecosystems, and preserve traditional ways of life.

AREAS OF SUPPORT OF THE COASTAL FUND

Environmental Education:

Projects that raise awareness and build community knowledge about the importance of marine and coastal ecosystems, encouraging active participation in their protection and sustainable management.

Cultural Heritage:

Initiatives that preserve, promote, and celebrate cultural traditions and practices tied to the sea, strengthening the identity and heritage of coastal communities.

Organizational Strengthening:

Enhance the capacity of local organizations in management, planning, and decision-making, ensuring the long-term sustainability and impact of their initiatives.

Conservation and Restoration:

Protect marine and coastal biodiversity, restore degraded ecosystems, and implement sustainable practices that mitigate human impacts on the environment.

Sustainable Economic Development:

Diversify income sources for coastal communities, such as ecotourism, sustainable aquaculture of local resources, and environmentally responsible production of goods and services.

Marine Education and Outreach_

(Go to educational materials)

Through the creation and dissemination of educational and outreach content, we seek to promote the responsible use of marine resources and foster knowledge of marine sciences, their diverse applications, and technological advances for biodiversity conservation.

We support schools, technical training centers, local initiatives, and public spaces so that they have greater and better access to the study of the marine environment, understand its essential role in ecosystems, and raise awareness of the challenges associated with its protection.
